Gurupurab at the NSW Parliament – A night of light love and humanity

November 19, 2025

Gurpurab marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, a teacher whose words changed the world by reminding us that all human beings are equal. Guru Nanak did not divide people — he connected them. He taught us to speak truth, earn honestly, share with others and see God in every single person.

Inside the Parliament, this message came to life. The atmosphere felt peaceful and calm. There was a kind of stillness that made everyone more aware of each other. You could feel kindness flowing through the room like light.

This was not a political gathering. It was a gathering of hearts.

Faith Leaders Sitting Together as One

One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was seeing leaders from different faiths sitting side by side as if they were one family.

Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and other community representatives sat together not to talk about differences, but to show the world that unity is possible and beautiful.

Among them was Ram Singh Bombay, a deeply respected Sikh leader who holds many important roles — Vice President of SGPC, President of United Singh Sabha Foundation India and a leader with the Global Sikh Council UK. When he spoke, his words were simple but touched everyone deeply. He reminded us that real worship is not only about rituals. It is about living with kindness, service and humility every day.

Community leaders like Patricia Jenkins, UN Ahmet Polat, Irfan Malik, Manu Kala, and Christine MacDonald added their own warmth to the evening. These are people who spend their lives helping others quietly and humbly. Their presence made the night feel complete.

Leaders Who Brought Comfort and Hope

The event was honoured by many leaders whose presence made a big difference. They did not just come as officials—they came as humans who care.

The Treasurer of NSW

The Treasurer shared a heartfelt message about unity, respect and the importance of celebrating Gurpurab within the walls of the Parliament. He spoke with genuine appreciation for Guru Nanak’s teachings and proudly talked about hosting this event with Gurnam Singh over the past three days. His words carried sincerity and warmth.

Gurmesh Singh MP

Gurmesh Singh spoke with honesty and simplicity. He reminded us that the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are for everyone, no matter their background. His message brought comfort and clarity to the room.

Leader of the Opposition

The Leader of the Opposition offered thoughtful words about how unity can be the strongest answer in a world that sometimes feels divided. His respect towards the community was clear and heartfelt.

Warren Kirby MP

If there was a moment many people will remember, it was the presence of Warren Kirby. His humility felt almost rare. He engaged with people with gentleness and sincerity. Many in the room felt that he is a leader who listens with his heart. His presence alone was a blessing.

Dr Janakiraman, Consul General of India

The Consul General’s presence added pride for every Indian living in Australia. He has always supported community gatherings, and his presence brought strength and warmth to the room.

Other Parliamentarians Who Joined Us

The celebration was further honoured by the attendance of

• Nathan Hagarty MP

• Charishma Kaliyanda MP

• Donna Davis MP

• Tim James MP

• Hugh McDermott MP

Their presence showed their respect and connection with the community. Every handshake, every smile and every shared moment added to the night’s spirit.

AISECS and Indians in Sydney: A Partnership Rooted in Community

For years, AISECS, led by Founder Gurnam Singh, has been bringing people together through culture, education and community service. But alongside AISECS stands another strong community pillar — Indians in Sydney, founded by Nadeem Ahmed.

Indians in Sydney is not just a community group. It is a family of over 135,000 people who support, uplift and protect one another. Under Nadeem Ahmed’s leadership, it has become a voice of unity, compassion and multicultural harmony.

It was important to acknowledge how both organisations – AISECS and Indians in Sydney – walked together during this celebration. One brought the event to life, and the other amplified its message with love. Together, they made the evening meaningful for thousands.

Nadeem Ahmed’s presence and support were deeply appreciated. His commitment to harmony and inclusiveness is felt across the Indian diaspora, and his efforts continue to bring communities closer every day.

Humanity at the Centre

As the program continued, the hall felt like a warm home. Parents sat with children. Elders shared smiles with young people. People introduced themselves to others they had never met. Instead of fear or division, there was trust. Instead of noise, there was peace.

This was the true message of the night:

Humanity comes before anything else.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent his life reminding the world that every human being has the same light inside them.

At the Parliament, that light shined bright.

What Made This Night Special

People will remember the colours, the speeches and the traditions. But more than anything, they will remember the feeling — the soft, peaceful feeling that filled the Parliament.

They will remember that for one evening, every barrier fell away. Every wall became smaller. And every heart beat a little louder with hope.

When the program ended, no one rushed to leave. People stayed to talk, to share blessings, to take photos and to simply feel connected. It was a moment that will stay with us for years.

A Heartfelt Thank You

On behalf of AISECS and the entire organising team, we want to thank every single person who attended the event. Your presence meant more than words can express.

To all leaders, community members, faith representatives, volunteers and families —

thank you for carrying the message of unity with us.

We may not be able to mention every name, but please know this:

you are part of this story. You helped write this moment. You mattered.

Carrying the Light Forward

The Gurpurab celebration at the NSW Parliament was not an ending. It was the beginning of something stronger.

It was a reminder that peace is possible when we choose understanding.

That unity is possible when we choose love.

And that humanity must always come first.

May Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings continue to guide us toward kindness, fairness and service.

May we carry this light not for one night, but every day.
